Focus on: Photocase

This week is the start of a new Saturday feature on NiltoMil.  I’m going to focus on one business or person in microstock and get as much info out about them as possible.  If you or your business wants to be featured, please email matt@niltomil.com to set that up and I’ll send over an interview form.

Agency’s own words: “Early users found that they were hooked on Photocase, and they wanted more, and not just from each other, but from new photographers. Friends told friends, colleagues told colleagues, and before long Photocase turned into one of those fabled High School parties where 1000 people show up, the piano ends up in the pool, someone drives a car through the front window and the owner is left standing on the lawn saying “but I only invited 5 people…”

Min. payout: 100€

My experience with Photocase

I gave Photocase a try on the recommendation of another microstock photographer (next week’s featured photographer) and quickly realized this site is not for me.  The images they reject are what all other agencies want.  The images they accept, no other agency would typically take (see this front page image).  It’s a tough balance for a microstocker.   I knew they were looking for more artistic images so did not submit any ‘over white’ and submitted some of my better, new work, all of which were summarily rejected.

Uploading is not easy or quick so having a bulk of images rejected is not going to brighten your day.  I’ve heard sales are decent so if you want to take your rejected “too artistic” stock and give it a try, that’s where I’d start.  The agency was pleasant to deal with and I have nothing bad to say about the people there.  Their tastes are not in line with what I produce so it was fruitless to continue.  I have closed my Photocase account.

#1 Steve Heap :

I can only add to what Matt says here. The site can only be described as strange! They have a concept of “interestingness” and so this image: http://www.photocase.com/photo/184318-stock-photo-sunset-nature-whale-beautiful-sky-sun has an interestingness of 4,111 and has been downloaded 11 times. Total income off the site is 10 Euros although I have only managed to get three photos accepted. I’ve no idea how to get more there as everything I upload gets rejected. Someone must have the secret, but it isn’t me!

#2 Frank :

Thanks for your review even you had trouble to get your photos on Photocase. As you say we are trying to focus on a different kind of stock photos. We are trying to be a real alternative for costumers who are not looking for photos “that all other agencies offer”. Which also brings a huge advantage for photographers. They have less competition on our site and a costumer doesn’t hast to scroll through 8 million photos that kinda look the same.

Thanks again we are really appreciate your opinion.

Frank
