I could very easily be obsessed with microstock but my current situation preludes devoting much time to microstock. I am really seeing the income potential of it as I haven't uploaded anything for two months and this past month is looking to be better than my average months income. Of course that probably won't last long unless I get back to uploading. I am really getting the itch to do so, guess I'll have to give up sleep.

I guess what I was thinking is "need" turns microstock into a job. Sure you can do it as a job but then it is NO fun. You can do it for "fun" but the more intense that feeling is the more likely you are to keep it up and keep going past the first 500-1500 images. And if you're watching your search results to see when you need to upload, you're already obsessed. ;)
You're right though - there are many motivations. I think obsession is not a motivation but maybe the result of many of your motivations coming to a head.
As far as momentum: it's absolutely 100% needed. Very key. At least for those who want to do this biz as a business.

That is true in a way Rasmus. I think there is a number of motivators to choose from though, such as need (invest enough and you have to keep producing to cover cost), fun (part-timers especially) and competition (when you see a 'rival' series, you move to protect search placement etc). Obsession is just as valid as any other motivator, and likely as common too, but it's not the only one.

I certainly agree that momentum is needed. Microstock is a strange beast but I think by finding a niche you like and by improving the level of the pictures to compete with the best is a good think to increase earnings.
But I agree you have to be a bit obsessed :)
Last summer sales were not bad so hopefully this year will be the same !

Interesting post and view. I wouldn't consider myself obsessed with stock photography, but if I would ask my girlfriend, she'd probably say yes. I just love my job and that gets me trough boring keywording tasks and accounting problems, just to create new images.

Interesting thought.
