So I have a problem and I know it. I’m addicted to organization. How is this a problem? It means I can’t free flow and do the “right” thing – I have to do the organized thing.
The way this relates to stock is this: I have to keep my collection completely caught up on every site before I feel like I can move on. This means I am obsessed with uploading to GraphicLeftovers everything that I’ve uploaded to Shutterstock. Which is great – until it takes me so long that I don’t submit ENOUGH to the agencies that produce.
This also means when an agency slows me down I feel so irritated because I know there will always be some agencies behind and that drives my organized brain batty! This is how I’m doing:
Now, DepositPhotos makes me nowhere near the money sites like Dreamstime and Shutterstock do but I still feel obsessed with catching up that 1804 even though I know I should instead do a new shoot and put it on the main sites. See? It’s a problem!
How do you handle “falling behind” or “catching up” on some sites? I try and balance and do both – new images and push some old stuff – but I NEVER completely catch up. Thoughts?
Once a year, dump 1-2 agencies that brought you the least in terms of RPI in that year…
Agreed, it is tough to keep focused on the areas that make you money. I try to keep a strict guideline when uploading images to always look at where I am making my money are start there first. If those sites are not up to date then I don’t move onto the next site. Stick to the list!
Write the list down and when you think … what should I do now, or where should I upload to now.. look at the list
“Do the organized thing” means right priority setting, and stick to the plan. What you describe is a badly organized thing to me – sorry Matt.
Shoot and process is important; and having entire portfolio uploaded to top 4 sites is most important. That’s it, the rest is when you have a break.
BTW do you know you can copy/paste categories, releases and/or keywords in DeepMeta from one photo to others? Time saver when you prepare series.
Yes, organized may be a bad word for it. Maybe I am “tidy.” I’m a little obsessive compulsive that way. I know I need to change it – that’s the reason for the post. I agree with having the entire folio on the top 4 but I also wouldn’t make it very far without the other sites I submit to so I do have to balance it.
Tyler – I like what you said because it gives me a way to be organized about it while still doing the right thing. That sounds like what I really need to be doing!
it’s a very old post but still well worth reading, it comes from a slightly different leadership perspective but the principle is the same

for me it’s so easy to get a great sense of achievement polishing off little tasks here and there but ignoring the big win task that is a little more complex. I do it all the time – and I should know better.
I keep submitting a few every week to sites like ShutterStock where having SOMETHING fresh each week will help the entire portfolio. I usually have enough to fill the iStock weekly quota. For others, I submit if I have time and feel in the mood. They don’t generate enough money to worry me though. (Veer did give me a nice $729 check for simple acceptance of 550+ images this summer, which was a good incentive to get them all in at once)
