November 2008 Earnings

Total November Earnings: $445.31

First of all, you’ll notice a few changes in my earnings tables this month.? I am going to be tracking my NiltoMil project on Google Spreadsheets.?? NiltoMil Microstock Earnings

I found out something interesting though, related to my results.

Now you know that my main goal the last week or so has been “The Long Tail” of microstock.? If you look though, my “tail” breaks completely after the top 7 agencies. That’s not a tail – that’s a waste of time.? As of today, I’m no longer uploading to MostPhotos, YayMicro, FeaturePics, FotoMind, Crestock or Canstock.? I have cancelled my account with Zymmetrical and will do the same with Crestock.? Once we get our MostPhotos and Fotomind money, we’ll likely be closing up shop there too if sales haven’t improved.? We will give Yaymicro until the end of 2009 and then reevaluate but I’m sticking with the 1500 images there, no new ones.

This is an example of where you should NOT think about Long Tail earnings. 1500 images on MostPhotos = $0 for 3 months.? Let’s do the math and 150,000 images ALSO = ~$0.? Do not waste your time on these false tails.

When I do my “Power Week” uploading, one thing I’m always running into is upload time.? As of today, I just cut it in half.? I hope this allows me to add FAR more images to the agencies I do stay with and who do help me earn money from microstock.? I’ll have a full evaluation of Power Week v2 in an upcoming post.

It would be interesting to compare your months’ totals with the portfolio size and with monthly portfolio growth at each of the agencies.

If you look at Sheet 2 you can see my portfolio size at each agency each month. Just change the page at the bottom and you’ll see it. :)

Got it! Is it possible to rename sheets in Google Spreadsheets similarly to Excel? Just to avoid blind sheet 1, sheet 2 etc…

BTW I am surprised that your performance at Stockxpert is so low. I am earning several times more there with much smaller portfolio (about 800 pics).

For you, I can! Check it.

I’m not sure about SXP – is it one of those places where images take awhile to season in, like Dreamstime? My DT earnings doubled over the last 4 months with NO new uploads. Just seasoning.

Thanks for sharing Matt. The seasoning point is interesting. Also, I think you’re spot on about focusing on a select few agencies. It’s unfortunately the chicken and egg problem facing new agencies. It’s a pain in the ass to upload/submit files. If they don’t have files, they don’t have buyers, and if they don’t have buyers, they won’t get files. The classic empty database problem.

Good luck with the power week.

Yeah there are a few sites where “seasoned” images do much better than new. Shutterstock is ALL about new images. Everyone knows that. What people don’t always get is that DT and FT work opposite. Basically when your image hits a certain # of downloads, it’s “Level” goes up. Higher level images are worth more so the first 1-5 hits for EVERY image sells very cheap and keeps your earnings low. The more Level 2-5 images you have instead of 1400 L1 images, the more you make everytime something sells.

Looks like SS is rocking for you. I have off and on followed your results, and it is interesting how we parallel on some sites and are wildly different on others. I expect you to totally eclipse me everywhere soon though, I just don’t have the same photo-work ethic. Thanks for posting up the info, it is good to see. I post my month to month vague results here:

SXP has started to move for me after about a year, so maybe it does need to “season”. I often think of SS as the short term reward to keep the uploading motivation and the other sites provide the long term reward. Then there is IS, but that is another story. Anyway, keep up the good work and thanks for posting.
